A not so daily record of the soundtrack to my life.

“Mathy” Post-Hardcore = WIN

Quick music lessons:

Math rock is sub-genre of rock music characterized by complex, atypical rhythms (often including irregular stopping and starting), frequent use of irregular time-signatures, and dissonant, angular guitars. Basically, it’s what rock music with ADD would sound like.

Post-Hardcore is a sub-genre that evolved from hardcore punk music, characterized by heavy sounding guitars, usually quick but varied tempo, and aggressive male vocals. The big difference between hardcore and post-hardcore would be that lyrically, post-hardcore music does not typically feature violent lyrics or themes. There is more emphasis on introspective lyrics and a focus on melody and rhythm.

BUT ANYWHO! I’ve been listening to a couple of bands lately that feature elements of both musical styles and I think it’s so cool! I mean the music sounds good at first listen, but what I like the most is the different layers of instrumentation and just how technical these guys get. There’s so many things going on at once that you have to listen a couple times to catch it all. Here are some examples.

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY – “CALL ME CHEESUS”

Mutiny On The Bounty

BLAKFISH – “JEREMY KYLE IS A MARKED MAN”

BlakFish

TUBELORD – “FEED ME A BOX OF WORDS”

Tubelord

THE TUPOLEV GHOST – “DIAGRAMS”

The Tupolev Ghost

Pretty instense stuff! Well that’s it for now! :P
